The walking looms in the Manos classroom are modeled after Spanish walking looms which were introduced to what is now the Southwestern United States by early Spanish settlers of Mexico. Traditional Rio Grande style weaving of New Mexico has always been done on Spanish walking looms. These looms are especially well suited for high tension weaving such as rug and tapestry weaving. However, they are also wonderful for weaving fabrics and just about anything else. We teach Beginning Weaving on walking looms because we believe they are the most comfortable weaving tool available. The standing position that the weaver takes makes it possible to weave for many hours without straining back muscles at all. We find that most weavers who try a walking loom never go back to the sit down variety.
Weaving Southwest has its own line of looms called Rio Grande walking looms. These are available to order by phone or come and see them in person at the shop!
